Quillfold 2.7 Release Notes
Version 2.7 makes offline edits merge cleanly, adds a quieter way to jump between notes, and fixes the eleven small things that kept annoying us. Full list below, nothing rounded up.
Quillfold 2.7 is out today, a Thursday, which is how we like it. This is a minor release. It changes how a few things behave and adds one small feature, and we've tried to describe each change exactly as it is.
What's new
Offline edits now merge instead of conflict. If you edit a note on your laptop on a train and the same note on your phone at home, 2.7 combines the two changes line by line. Before, you'd get a conflict copy and have to reconcile by hand. A conflict copy is still created when both edits touch the same line, because guessing there would be worse than asking. Linnea rewrote the merge step over the spring, and it's the biggest change in this release by a wide margin.
Quick switcher. Press the shortcut for it, start typing a note's title, and press return. It matches on any part of the title and remembers the three notes you opened last, so they appear before you type anything. It doesn't search note bodies. Search is still its own screen, and we'd rather do one job well here.
Pinned notes keep their order. You can drag pinned notes into the sequence you want. In 2.6 they re-sorted themselves alphabetically after every sync, which several of you reported, politely and often.
What changed
The sidebar's default width is slightly narrower, so note titles wrap a little earlier. You can still drag it to any width you prefer, and Quillfold remembers it per window.
Exporting a note as plain text now keeps blank lines between paragraphs. They were collapsing before.
The word count in the status bar ignores markdown symbols, so a heading no longer counts its pound signs as a word.
What we fixed
Eleven bugs, listed in the order they were reported.
Pasting a link over selected text sometimes replaced the text instead of turning it into a link.
Undo after a merge could step back past the merge point. It now stops there.
A note with more than two thousand lines scrolled to the top after every sync.
The "Copy as markdown" command skipped the final line of a note that didn't end in a newline.
Dark mode showed a white flash when opening a second window.
Tags containing an apostrophe couldn't be renamed.
The date in a note's footer used the sync time instead of the last edit time on notes that had never been synced.
Dragging a note into a folder that was already open sometimes dropped it one row below.
The quit confirmation appeared even when everything had been saved.
Very long tag names pushed the sidebar's count badge out of view.
Cancelling a rename left the old name highlighted until you clicked elsewhere.
Known issues
We'd rather tell you than have you find out. Two things remain open. Merging does not yet handle a note edited on three devices at once in the way we'd like; the result is correct but sometimes less tidy than it could be. And the quick switcher ignores accented characters when matching, so searching for "cafe" will not find a note called "Café". Ravi has a fix in review for the second one and expects it in 2.7.1.
Upgrading
Quillfold updates itself in the background, and there's nothing to migrate. Your notes, tags and pins carry over exactly as they were. If you'd rather wait a week and let other people find the sharp edges, that's reasonable, and the release will still be here.
Thanks to everyone who sent in a bug report. The tidy ones with steps to reproduce were a pleasure, and a few of the untidy ones were better.
