Segmenting your newsletter with tags
Send campaigns only to subscribers with specific tags — filter by interest, subscription tier, or any custom label you've applied.
Sending every newsletter to your entire list is fine when you're starting out. As your audience grows you'll want to reach specific groups — paying subscribers only, readers interested in a particular topic, or members who haven't engaged in 30 days. Tags make this possible.
Tagging subscribers
Go to Admin → Members. Click any subscriber to open their profile. In the Tags field, add tags — freeform labels like 'paying', 'topic:recipes', 'engaged', or 'trial'. You can also bulk-tag: select multiple members using the checkboxes, then click 'Apply tag' in the action bar at the top. Tags are case-insensitive and there's no limit on how many tags a subscriber can have.
Tags applied automatically
VeloCMS applies certain tags automatically: 'paid' is applied when a member activates a paid subscription and removed when they cancel. 'free' is the default for all unsubscribed or free-tier members. You can layer your own custom tags on top of these system tags to create more granular segments.
Filtering a campaign by tag
When creating a campaign in Admin → Newsletter → New Campaign, look for the Audience section. By default it's set to 'All subscribers'. Click 'Filter by tag' and enter one or more tags. The member count updates in real time to show how many people match your filter. You can use AND logic (subscriber must have all tags) or OR logic (subscriber has any of these tags) via the toggle.
The filtered member count shown at campaign creation is a snapshot. If members change tags between now and when you send, the send uses the tags as they are at send time — not the count shown during editing.
Common segmentation patterns
- Send a paid-only update: filter by the 'paid' tag.
- Re-engagement campaign: filter by 'inactive' (apply this tag manually to members who haven't opened in 90 days).
- Topic-specific content: tag members who clicked links on your recipes posts with 'topic:recipes', then segment future recipe newsletters.
- Trial conversion: filter by 'trial' to send a targeted upgrade nudge in the last week before their trial ends.
